Directed by Stanley Kramer. Written by John Paxton, based on Nevil Shute 's 1957 novel of the same name. As in the novel, much of On the Beach takes place in Melbourne, close to the southernmost part of the Australian mainland. Principal photography took place from January 15 to March 27, 1959. The film was shot in Berwick, then a town outside Melbourne, and Frankston, described in the film as 45 minutes away from Melbourne.
